This sneaky AB1726 bill was authored by Asm. Rob Bonta (D), Asm. David Chiu (D), Asm. Evan Low (D), Asm. Philip Ting (D), Asm. Shirley Weber (D), Asm. Das Williams (D), and is being fast tracked to be voted on March 15th at 1:30pm by the California Assembly. Masking under the pretense of doing census survey to document the differences among different sub-species of the Asian American community, it would achieve the real effect of dividing up our community into contentious subgroups for differential treatments as justifications to bring back SCA5 style legislation for all the racial groups. The solution to racial preferences is not more racial preferences on a finer mesh. As Chief Justice Roberts succinctly put it “The way stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.” SDAAFE firmly support the constitutional standard set by the US Supreme Court that race, ethnicity and national origins are protected category, and shall not be used to select person or group for favorable or disfavorable treatments. Examples of earlier verdicts include: “One of the principal reasons race is treated as a forbidden classification is that it demeans the dignity and worth of a person to be judged by ancestry instead of his or her own merit and essential qualities” (Rice v. Cayetano). “Preferring members of any group for no reason other than race or ethnic origin is discrimination for its own sake” (Regents of UC v. Bakka).
SDAAFE Foundation is a rapidly-growing non-partisan political organization promoting active civic engagement in public affairs and defending Asian American interests. We have the largest Asian American PAC in San Diego with over 1700 supporters. We empower our community by providing an accessible platform for individual political engagement, and have demonstrated effectiveness in mass mobilization when called for by current events.
