SDAAFE (San Diego Asian Americans for Equality) successfully concluded its inaugural Installation Dinner. The historic event on April 25th, 2015 attracted more than 120 attendees including SDAAFE members, as well as elected officials and their representatives at federal, state, city and local school districts, leaders of local Asian American organizations, principals of local language schools, and the media. Several candidates running for the 2016 city council election also joined the dinner.
San Diego District 6 City Council Chris Cate, the first Asian-American city councilman in 50 years, presented the keynote speech at the event. Cate also led the installation of the 2015 board members and executive directors of SDAAFE.
Congressman Scott Peters, State Senator Marty Block, Assembly Speaker Toni Akins and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer all sent their representatives to present proclamations and certificates to SDAAFE board members and executive directors.
Carol Kim, representing local Democratic Party and TJ Zane, representing local Republican Party, Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff, vice president of Poway Unified School (PUSD) Board of Education, all spoke to congratulate and encourage more civic engagement of Asian Americans. Kimberley Beatty, president of PUSD Board of Education concluded the event with a touching closing remark full of real life stories at PUSD that exemplified the importance of civic engagement in ensuring our democracy and self-governance.
As one of the very few non-partisan Asian-American Political Action Committee (PAC), SDAAFE was founded with the mission to advocate full equality for Asian Americans by encouraging and promoting civic engagement of its members and reaching out to the broader community.
